Chapter 13

The domino theory

THE WEEK WAS QUIET UNTIL BRENDA HEARD about the twilight horseback ride that was to take place on an impending Friday night. Just everybody was going, but her parents didn't understand. They said it cost too much. And they reminded her constantly that she had never ridden a horse. She decided to stress her desire for new experiences.

It was now early Thursday morning. Brenda was outside, helping her mother with the gardening till Brandon came downstairs at last. She handed her mom the stuff she needed: watering can; shovel; plant. Her mother still wasn't buying the new-experiences argument. And the ride was still too expensive.

"I'm nobody here," Brenda said dejectedly. "I have no clothes—"

While she built a little mound of dirt to support the stem of a dahlia, Mrs. Walsh said, "Seems to me what you're wearing fits all the definitions of clothes."

Brenda was not convinced. Covering one's body was not enough.

Mrs. Walsh glanced sideways at Brenda and said, "Look, Brenda, if people think well of you only for your appearance, they don't really think well of you."

A typical Mom argument. They weren't getting anywhere. Brandon bounded out of the house, collected her, and they headed out for school in Mondale. What a drag.
